VAMFF: Pengalaman Fashion Show di Negeri Kanguru


Sebenernya udah lama banget aku pengen sharing tentang pengalaman aku setelah terpilih sebagai pemenang The Australia-Indonesia Young Fashion Designer of the Year 2015-16 di Jakarta Fashion Week 2016 tahun lalu (baca artikel ini: Australia Fashion's Big Moment in Indonesia).  Tapi setelah rangkaian kegiatan fashion show di VAMFF Maret 2016 lalu, ternyata aku makin sibuk dan mager buat nulis hahahahahahaha :P jangan ditiru! 
Akhirnya, baru sekarang deh kesampean untuk nulis tentang pengalaman aku selama di Melbourne. Selain itu, momen nya juga pas banget karena tahun ini JFW dan AIC (Australia-Indonesia Centre) kembali ngadain award ini untuk ketiga kalinya secara berturut-turut dari tahun 2014. Pas banget untuk panas-panasin temen-temen IFF (Indonesia Fashion Forward) yang ikut kompetisi AIC Fashion Award tahun ini supaya makin semangat bikin koleksi, business plan, dan presentasi saat final... hahahahahha ganbatte......

Bisa dikatakan, hal yang paling seru dan berkesan dari event VAMFF X ETU ini adalah Wardah Beauty menjadi sponsor utama ETU untuk creating engagement event bersama Muslim fashion designer Australia dan desainer hits Indonesia seperti Ria Miranda, desainer sepatu Shotistic Andita Widy, dan Fashionpreneur gorjes Mamak Sarah Sofyan yang punya butik kece banget di Cikajang, Kebayoran Baru; Rumah Ayu untuk memperkenalkan brand lokal kita ke pasar internasional. Terakhir, bagi siapapun yang nanti menang AIC Fashion Award tahun ini, tips paling penting adalah: bawa baju ganti sebanyak-banyaknya karena acara selama 10 hari ga berhenti-berhenti dari subuh sampe jam 10 mlm (yes, acara dimulai dengan breakfast meeting dari jam 5 pagi dan berakhir fashion show jam 10 mlm). Jangan lupa jaga kesehatan dan solat yaa!

ETUVLOG #003: Tutorial Hijab Square


Hiiii....
Hari ini aku mau memberikan 3 tutorial menggunakan Hijab Square dengan bahan Voal. Apa sih bahan voal itu? Enak gak sih bahan voal?
Nah aku mau cerita sedikit tentang bahan voal atau voile. Bahan voal atau voile adalah bahan yg soft, sheer fabric dan light weight; yang terbuat dr bahan katun 100% atau bahan campuran katun/ cotton blend (biasanya di-blend dengan linen atau polyester) dan untuk bahan #voalbasic @ra_info ini merupakan bahan cotton blend yang dicampur dengan polyester.
Kok di-blend? Kenapa gak katun aja 100%? Bukannya polyester panas ya? 
Nahhhh ini diaa, polyester menjadi campuran untuk bahan #voalbasic @ra_info karna sifatnya yang tidak mudah kusut, anti bacterial dan cepat kering sehingga ketika di campurkan ke bahan katun yg memiliki sifat mudah menyerap keringat, mudah kusut dan breathable karna sifatnya yg organik membuat komposisi scarf ini menjadi pas! Sehingga bahan #voalbasic ini menjadi tidak mudah kusut, adem, ringan, serta nyaman digunakan. Kelebihan lainnya, bahan ini terlihat agak sedikit mengkilat, sehingga menghasilkan look yang elegant. Kalau dilihat-lihat seperti bahan organza tapi versi yang lebih flowy dan easy to wear for everyday  #eheemmmmpromosiii

The Rationalist: God Speaks through His Creation


Bismillahirrohmannirrohiim..

Ya Allah, please bring me out of the darkness of doubt and favour me with the light of comprehension.
Ya Allah, open to us the doors of your mercy and unfold for us the treasure of your knowledge by your mercy. O the most merciful of the merciful ones.

Fourteen centuries ago, Allah sent down the Qur'an to Prophet Muhammad saw. as a book of guidance and rahmat to the whole universe. This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah, the Al-Muttaqun (Q.S. Al-Baqarah: 2). From the day of its revelation to the day of judgment, Allah Himself who will guard it from the corruption (Q.S. Al-Hijr: 9).

I still remember the day I studied the Quran and learned to recite it when I was a child. The verse that always resound in my head is Q.S. Al-Jaatsiyah: 13

“Dan Dia telah menundukkan untukmu apa yang di langit dan apa yang di bumi semuanya, (sebagai rahmat) daripada-Nya. Sesungguhnya pada yang demikian itu benar-benar terdapat tanda-tanda (kekuasaan Allah) bagi kaum yang berfikir”

If you guys remember ETU Spring/ Summer 2016 collection on Jakarta Fashion Week year ago, I presented “The Rationalist” collection inspired by Allah’s perfection in the nature and in His creation. It is the golden ratio, which originally based on The Fibonacci numbers.

The Fibonacci numbers is that each one consists of the sum of the two numbers before it.

0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, 377, 610, 987, 1597, 2584, …

Fibonacci numbers have an interesting property. When you divide one number in the sequence by the number before it, you obtain numbers very close to one another. In fact, this number is fixed after the 13th in the series. This number is known as the "golden ratio" or 1.618

233 / 144 = 1.618
377 / 233 = 1.618
610 / 377 = 1.618
987 / 610 = 1.618
1597 / 987 = 1.618
2584 / 1597 = 1.618

“You will not find any flaw in the creation of the All-Merciful. Look again-do you see any gaps? Then look again and again. Your sight will return to you dazzled and exhausted!” (Q.S. Al-Mulk, 3-4)

Yes! The Rationalist was inspired by the beauty and perfection of Allah’s creation in the nature. And I am proud that my (side) job as a fashion designer can also be my way to share about the beauty of Islam and to share the message of the Quran. Wallahu’alam.

As the Quran says several times “Innafii dzaalika la-aayatulliqoumiy yatafakkaruun (Verily, in it are signs for a people who think deeply)”, I do believe (and indeed, we all have to), that Allah does speak through His creation and through the nature.

Spring/ Summer 2015 – 16
 “The Rationalist” Concept

The concept behind ETU design is Restu Anggraini interest in taking men's shapes and translating them into womenswear. In Restu opinion, menswear like long coat, blazer, trousers, shirt, T-shirt, etc. are just about the garments; it all means the same thing. No matter if it's a man or woman wearing it, they are a neutral zone. When we talk about modest fashion for women, we have to follow the rules of Islamic fashion which are extent of body covered, looseness, thickness, and overall appearance. And in ETU Spring Summer JFW 2016, Restu feels that menswear shapes which boxy, oversized, and masculine are very suitable for the “modest” concept of ETU. So, ETU think to people, not to gender.
When talking about premium modest workwear segment, people will always think about clean and functional look. And perhaps, it makes the choices very limited and challenging. The purpose of ETU design is to create unique silhouettes by interlacing several fabrics with paneling, color contrast, and fabric manipulation technique. So, we want to make ETU different by applying a unique technique as our design hallmark. You could simply see it in this collection by which ETU used layered basic garments, (where both gender could wear it) to create the clean and functional look. Thus, makes the look of workwear to become more sophisticated in its silhouettes.
Moreover, ETU also introduces The Golden Ratio construction into her basic garments and asymmetric outers through its new pinching and origami petal geometric techniques. The Golden Ratio, which originally based on The Fibonacci numbers, is widely believed as the work of God in nature. The Golden Ratio is a product not of mathematical imagination, but of a natural principle related to the laws of equilibrium. The Golden Ratio is an aesthetic rule well known and applied by artists.

Works of art based on that ratio represent aesthetic perfection. Some of the most well known Golden Ratio structures and arts are the design of natural spiral in nautilus and sea shell, The Mona Lisa, The Phartenon, da Vinci’s illustration on De Divina Proportione, etc. The spirals based on The Golden Ratio contain the most incomparable designs we can find in nature. In conclusion, The Golden Ratio which consistently appears in the sleeves, collar, front panels, details, necktie, and even in waistline measurement on this collection will express ETU efforts in creating the beautiful and timeless designs with uncompromised quality.

Collection Story

In this Spring/ Summer 2016 Jakarta Fashion Week campaign, ETU tells about successful young woman who always thinks logically before actually thinking an action, including on how to dress themselves. She is very smart, confidence, classy, and highly socialite.

Seeing herself of being powerful, she always thinks of herself as a role model and a good example on everything she does. That’s why everything in this collection is carefully analyzed and tailored to every empowered and successful woman’s needs.

#ETUgoingplaces - Ria Etu Chicago Trip with Bekraf & Wardah Beauty


Haaiiii aku lanjutin lagi yaaa cerita Business Trip aku ke Chicago. Sedikit review tentang post sebelumnya yaitu "#ETUgoingplaces: Chicago Trip with Bekraf" aku dan beberapa teman desainer Indonesia seperti ; Ria Miranda, Irin dari Kami Idea, Ka Rimma dari KAIMMA Malabis, dan Mba Isni dari Ltru mendapatkan kesempatan yang luar biasa untuk bisa ekspansi ke pasar Amerika, pasar yang mana, sama sekali tidak terpikirkan oleh kami semua karna mengingat jarak yang di tempuh juga amat sangat jauh, sangking jauhnya aku sampe berbekal banyak obat-obatan traditional #anaknyabeneranlokalbanget #biargakmabok okeehh lanjutttt.....
Ketika Transit di Narita, kami langsung cuss cari makanan, yang halal dounk pastinya seperti lipstick #intensematte dari Wardah
Kebetulan pada pejalanan kali ini aku super hepi karna satu trip dengan Uni Ria, aku kenal Uni kalau gak salah tahun 2010, pada saat kami sama-sama membuat Hijabers Community. Pasti sudah pada tau dounk apa itu hijabers community? dan pada saat yang sama pula kami sama-sama merintis label kami. Singkat kata, perjalanan pertemanan yang cukup lama membuat aku dan Uni makin dekat. Sampai pada akhirnya kami bersama-sama membuat event Succeeding Together di Melbourne yang disponsori oleh Wardah Beauty berlanjut hingga ke Chicago, Amerika. Seperti yang sudah aku bahas di post sebelumnya, aku dan suami membagi tugas selama di Chicago, begitu pula dengan Uni Ria dan Pandu. 
Kami berdua merasa sangat beruntung memiliki Support System, yaitu suami yang selalu mensupport kami hingga sampai sekarang, karna bagaimanapun juga patner yang paling ideal adalah pasangan kita.

Di sana kami membagi tugas, para suami yang berjaga di booth, dan para istri membuat campaign di bantu Wardah Beauty untuk membuat dokumentasi perjalanan kami selama di Amerika. Karna kami sadar, generasi sekarang generasi yang melek akan informasi yang cepat, sehingga kami pun ingin membagi pengalaman kami dan mendokumentasikannya. Sebagai pebisnis, buat Aku dan uni, time is money. Kami gak akan mau menyia-nyiakan waktu kami untuk hal-hal yang tidak berguna, kerja keras itu seperti nama tengah kami (tiba-tiba pasang tampang serius sambil menyingsingkan lengan kemeja) hahahhahah bercanda. Intinya apa yag kami lakukan ini semata-mata menjadi salah satu strategy branding, brand kami dan juga menjadi dokumentasi yang nantinya akan kami laporkan kepada BEKRAF yang sudah membawa kami berdua ke sini.

Awalnya aku merasa bahwa Chicago kota yang sepi, karna hotel dan venue pameran kami ternyata cukup jauh dari kota, tetapi kemudian pikiran itu berubah 180 derajat. Chicago bener-benar kota yang indah, kota kedua yang aku suka setelah Tokyo. Bersih, tenang dan warganya pun ramah-ramah, beberapa kali cara berpakaian kami dipuji oleh orang-orang yang tidak segaja kami temui. Menurut mereka, cara berpakaian kami sangat modern dan indah, bahkan ada yang memuji beautiful terhadap material yang kami gunakan. Wahhh baru saya sadari ketika mengunjungi beberapa butik mewah di sana, mayoritas produknya made in Indonesia! wihhh bangga deh. Secara tidak langsung potensi kita untuk bisa masuk ke pasar Amerika besar juga ya apalagi populasi muslim di Amerika terus meningkat.   
Beruntung rasanya, Wardah selalu support kami, bahkan sampai ke sini. Membantu aku dan uni mewujudkan mimpi kami, membantu kami mengepakkan sayap (kek burung yakk hahhaha) sampai dimana pun. Selain bangga karena Wardah adalah produk Indonesia yang mampu bersaing dengan brand makeup international, produk-produk wardah selalu inovatif dan pastinya produknya juga halal (ini yang penting).

Buat aku dan uni, Chicago memberikan banyak inspirasi untuk mendesain, iya gak sih un? Kota yang cantik, modern dan nyaman membuat kami berdua ingin berlama-lama di sini, tapi sayangnya kita gak bisa lama-lama, mengingat ada anak, show JFW yang di depan mata dan karyawan yang harus kita pantau hahahahhhahah
Seminggu bersama uni tuh rasanya seru banget. Pantesan yaahh banyak banget fansnya uni. Selain humble, uni tuh perhatian, enak diajak diskusi, keibuan, empatinya tinggi banget, seruuu banget, konyol dan jail tapi uni juga termasuk orang yang tegas dan to the point. Liburan ataupun kerja bareng sama uni itu nyenengin banget. Kira-kira kemana lagi yaa un kita akan berpetualang ehheheheheheh

ETU Presents “Continuum” Collection on International Fashion Showcase, London Fashion Week


Supported and organized by HijUp.com, an e-commerce enterprise in Muslim fashion, BEKRAF Indonesia, and the British Council, ETU as one of the four Indonesian designers participating in the International Fashion Showcase of the LWF 2016, presents her “Continuum” collection at the campaign.
Originally prepared for “Beginning Ethical Fashion” project on Jakarta Fashion Week 2016, Continuum was inspired by a science fiction of post-apocalyptic Earth far in the future. The collection is intended as a critique on societal issues caused by irresponsible clothing industry.  It addresses consumerism, environmental problems, waste management, human impact on the environment, and risks to human civilization and the planet Earth. During the brainstorming, ETU research team worked with the help and support of one of the most leading chemical company in Japan, Asahi Kasei, by supplying 100% biodegradable and zero-waste cupro fiber, BEMBERG. The most interesting part of the whole design process is the fact that the collection was hugely inspired by the spacetime concept of Einstein’s General Relativity Theory and the animated movie, Wall-E, 2008.
“The Continuum” Story

Once upon a time in the future, Earth is long abandoned and covered in lots of garbage leftover from decades of mass consumerism facilitated by the greedy and irresponsible corporations. Humans are “eating away at our own life support systems” at a rate unseen in the past thousands of years by degrading land and freshwater systems, emitting greenhouse gases, and releasing vast amounts of harmful chemicals into the environment. Our lives, our nations, our future are become so toxic and danger. Earth has become one ginormous landfill, so cluttered and polluted that it cannot sustain organic life anymore.

An Environmental Task Unit, called ETU, is sent back to the past to warn the mankind and to prevent the disaster without causing disturbances in the space-time continuum. Before ETU travels to the past, the future government says:

“You can think of the Earth like a battery that has been charged very slowly over billions of years. You have to tell them that the sun’s energy is stored in plants and fossil fuels, but humans are draining energy much faster than it can be replenished. Warn and let them know the truth. There is never time in the future in which we will work out our salvation. The challenge is in the moment; the time is always now.”

ETU then realizes that the language that every human easily understand is the language of fashion in the clothing we are wearing. ETU think that fashion is the gift from God to the first human being as a protection against sin. The protection against temptation that thrown out human from the heaven. ETU believes that the disaster will be prevented if human understand that the fashion they wear, had even a touch of the modesty, the respect for human dignity; fashion that is sustainable for the future.

“The Continuum” Concept

In this Beginning Ethical Fashion collection, ETU introduces a Japanese technology fabric from cupro fiber; Bemberg™ by Asahi Kasei Fiber Corporation. A 100% biodegradable fabric that returns to nature and gentles to the environment. The collection employs fabric manipulation technique, called “smocking”, by using hand stitching and experienced craftsmanship to create areas of tension and release in the fabric. This results in very sculptural effects and complex pattern on some details at this collection. We carefully create the structure in different effects by marking out the fabric using dots or a grid, and stitching it by hand.

The smocking technique causes unique formation in both sides, creating double effects at front and at the back of the fabric; here comes the concept of “continuum”. ETU wants people to think that the clothing people wear actually has a double meaning: the fashion itself, and the true cost of resources and energy use behind that fashion. In this collection, ETU makes flowery and leafs effects to remind people that we have a responsibility to use and to produce fashion sustainably and ethically. A fashion that is responsible to the environment and sustainable for the future.

Bemberg™ Cupro Fiber by Asahi Kasei; A 100% biodegradable fabric created with the aid of science.
Linen; Linen is very absorbent and valued for their exceptional coolness and freshness in hot weather.
Ramie Fiber; Ramie fiber is very durable, is pure white in color and has a silky luster. Extremely absorbent and therefore comfortable to wear especially during warm weather.

Alhamdulillah bulan lalu brand aku @ra_info lolos kurasi dan mendapatkan kesempatan dari BEKRAF atau Badan Ekonomi Kreatif untuk ekspansi pasar  ke Chicago, Amerika. Menurut para kurator, brand kami memiliki bisnis plan yang jelas dan desainnya pun cocok untuk pasar di Amerika. Menurut aku, penting banget loh untuk kita yang akan memulai usaha ataupun yang sedang menjalankan usaha untuk memiliki plan yang jelas mau dibawa kemana brand kita kedepannya. Yahh walaupun tidak semua plan berjalan sesuai harapan, tetapi minimal kita sudah memiliki strategi bagaimana dan dengan cara apa brand ini akan berkembang.

Untuk persiapannya sendiri, aku lebih ke menyiapkan sales kit untuk market disana dan beberapa sample produk. Karna memang tujuan aku kesana lebih ingin mendapatkan wholesale buyers dan juga memberikan banyak alternatif pilihan untuk customer Amerika memilih desain dan material yang memang di sukai oleh pasar di sana. Kalo ditanya, kok jauh-jauh gak banyak bawa barang? jawabannya sih singkat aja! Bagasinya kurang hhhahahahahahahhaha

Perjalanan kami pun cukup panjang hampir 23 jam! kaki mati rasa rasanya, maklum nih jarang olah raga, makin nambah umur kok berasa makin renta :( okeehh lanjut... Sampai di Chicago kami pun di jamu oleh Bapak Wijayanto selaku Director of ITPC/Indonesia Trade Promotion Center, yang mana organisasi ini dibentuk di bawah kementrian perdagangan yang bertugas untuk memberikan informasi tentang hal-hal yang berhubungan dengan perdagangan.

Setelah selesai makan malam, kami pun segera kembali ke hotel untuk mempersiapkan barang-barang yang akan di pamerkan besok #langsungtelentolakangin #bukanpromosi #anaknyalokalbanget

Selama business trip ini aku dan suami membagi tugas, suami yang jaga gawang di booth, aku dan uni Ria Miranda ke downtown untuk melihat style muslim Amerika seperti apa? material apa yang warga muslim Amerika suka? Rata-rata umur yang berhijab brp? karna sayang aja kan, sudah jauh-jauh ke Chicago tapi data yang kita dapat hanya dari event saja. Karna  menurut kami, event ini belum bisa menggambarkan keseluruhan market muslim di Amerika yang selalu membuat aku penasaran.
